How to block Google Analytics until consent

Keep GA4 and ads tags from firing before opt-in — and verify with a privacy scan.

Why pre-consent analytics is a problem

If Analytics sets identifiers or collects personal data before consent, you may lack a valid basis under GDPR for that processing. The fix is technical as much as legal: do not load the tag until the visitor accepts.

Practical approach

1) Inventory every analytics and marketing tag (GTM, GA4, pixels). 2) Gate them behind your consent tool’s categories. 3) Default to denied for non-essential groups. 4) Rescan the site in a fresh session to confirm no analytics calls before accept.

PrivBeacon’s free scan highlights trackers that still load early so you can catch misconfigured tag managers and theme embeds.

After it works

Update your cookie and privacy policies to match the real categories, and consider a Certified Private badge once your compliance score clears the threshold.
